Council sponsorship could boost Coast sporting tourism
CYCLING, yoga and Oztag are set to attract thousands of people to the Sunshine Coast, if council sponsorship deals come off.
Sunshine Coast Council discussed funding options for three major events in confidential session of its ordinary meeting at the Nambour Council Chambers yesterday.
The Australian Festival of Cycling, Wanderlust yoga festival and Oztag state championships are looking for council support.
The Wanderlust festivals are described as "all-out ecstatic celebrations".
They bring together the world's leading yoga teachers, musical acts, renowned speakers and chefs.
The Queensland Oztag State Cup between January and March, 2015, is already advertised as a Sunshine Coast event.
While no decision has been made on any final sponsorship agreement, community members are already welcoming the prospect of new major events boosting the Coast coffers.
Another event being considered for sponsorship is the Sunshine Coast Cycle Fest.
Co-organiser Adam Mathieson said plans were in full swing for the two-day event in September next year.
He said the event would go on regardless of the council's decision, but he would love to have them on board.
Six events were planned throughout the festival.
"Each day there are upwards of a thousand people on the Sunshine Coast getting on their bikes and hitting the roads," Mr Mathieson said.
"But there was nowhere on the Coast where there was a real festival for all skill levels.
"I'd go to events such as the Brisbane to Gold Coast ride and see so many Sunshine Coast riders nominating for that, so this is an opportunity to have something in their own backyard."
