59-year-old hurt in explosion at Flinders View residence

POLICE were last night preparing to determine what caused a pipe to explode on Ripley Rd Flinders View, injuring a woman with shrapnel.

Inspector Dave Preston said a tradesman called police about 4.30pm yesterday to say a pipe he was about to work on had exploded after falling on the ground.

"The pipe was capped on both ends and it was leaning against his ute," Inspector Preston said.

"He was preparing to attach it to the ute. As he walked away it fell on the ground and the cap blew off and the shrapnel injured the legs of the man's wife who was nearby.

"There must have been a build-up of something inside the pipe and when it hit the ground it went off.

"Police conducted a search of the property and no other devices were there. We'll take the pipe away and test it."
