Bogan Hunters is the car testicles of television

THIRD time might be a charm for Pauly Fenech.

And if his latest show Bogan Hunters (7Mate,Tuesdays 9.30pm) was indeed a charm, it would surely be one of those delightful car-accessory testicles; the ones that discerning motoring enthusiasts dangle from their rear, um, tow balls.

Pauly, the little nuggety guy responsible for atrocious cult shockers Pizza and Housos, now finds himself at the helm of 7Mate's highest rating entertainment program to date. In fact, it's the second highest rating program for the channel ever, beaten only by a live Liverpool-Melbourne soccer game last year.

I caught up on an episode of the current series this week and it is a disturbing head-scratcher.

It operates on its own wavelength and in its own genre, reality…but with a "cast" of three hosts: Kev the Kiwi (who averages about three syllables per episode), Shazza (possessor of truly frightening facial expressions, often triggered by burnouts, arguments with boyfriends and/or too much VB) and Pauly.

The trio travel around Australia on the search for Australia's greatest bogans.

It's a comedy, sure, and Shazza comes out with some good lines.

But it also shines a light on places I'd prefer stayed as dark as some of the featured bogans' deformed incisors.

Dodgy tattoos, domestic violence, discrimination, alcoholism, meaningless sex, teen pregnancy, reckless driving, drug-taking, dole-bludging: it's all celebrated and yahooed about.

I don't find that stuff funny. Do you need to be a bogan to appreciate it? Maybe it's rating so highly because Australia is overflowing with bogans.

Whatever it is, let's keep these dirty little secrets exactly that: dirty, little and secret.

Please God, don't sell this overseas.
