Bowditch improves but falls short

STEVEN Bowditch's third major came to an early end yesterday when the Peregian Beach 31-year-old failed to make the cut at the US PGA Championship in Kentucky.

Bowditch entered the second round of the $10 million event on three-over par and could not turn things around as he made his way to a one-over 72.

It was a marked improvement on his opening round, which contained seven bogies, but not enough to continue in the prestigious tournament.

Bowditch made his Masters debut at Augusta earlier this year and finished in a tie for 26th. He secured his spot in both the Masters and the PGA by winning the Valero Texas Open at San Antonio in March.

It was his breakthrough victory on the US PGA Tour.

This year, he has made 14 of 26 cuts and is 49th in the season's FedEx Cup rankings.

After struggling with a back complaint, former world No.1Tiger Woods also failed to make the cut in Kentucky.

Queensland's Jason Day ended the day one shot behind leader and world No.1Rory McIlroy, who was on nine under.
