Mavis still bowling them over at 97
MAVIS Peters has been lining up pins for more than a quarter of a decade.
Each Monday, without fail, the dedicated league bowler gets a lift into the Suncity Tenpin at Alexandra Headland and mixes it with the best of them.
Yesterday was unlike any Monday before - she celebrated her 97th birthday.
In grand style, the cake was large enough to feed not only the league players, but the juniors that came in during the afternoon as well.
The milestone has made her the oldest female league bowler the club has had since it opened.
Suncity Tenpin director John Griffin said Ms Peters had been a member since before electronic scoring had come to the club.
"She was a fairly good bowler. Back in '87 she earned her 200 pin with a game of 202," he said.
"Her average is probably around 86 these days, but it is rather special for someone to be active at her age."
Mr Griffin said Ms Peters enjoyed the social aspect of the game and always looked forward to the afternoon tea gossip session before she was driven home.
Ms Peters has been using a 5kg ball, but Suncity presented her with a voucher to buy a 3.5kg ball so she could continue to bowl.
