WE SAY: Council breakaway has only just begun

OUR VIEW: IT'S a topic that seems to easily get under many people's skin.

Whether for or against de-amalgamation, Noosa's split from Sunshine Coast certainly seems to have sailed into troubled waters.

Just a couple of months ago, the budget revealed Noosa's enviable figures - quite a feat for a council that controversially gained its independence.

Independence is now what many are saying the area should continue with.

The stakes are high, as it intertwines another subject that can make or break so many - money.

$20 million is a serious amount of cash and the debate over where it should come from has become equally austere.

Former councillor Lew Brennan put his 15-year career as a councillor on the line by expressing concern over a possible blow-out.

Local Government Minister David Crisafulli and Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson warned, based on figures from the Treasury, that all was not as financ

ially simple as it seemed.

The next questions that must be answered: what is the $20 million for and where will it come from?

The tale of Noosa leaving the Sunshine Coast has been a long-running one, yet somehow it feels as though it's only just beginning.
