Human remains found in septic tank at back of school

POLICE say the remains of a man have been found in an old septic tank in the bay-side suburb of Brighton in Brisbane's north.

Homicide detectives converged on a school for children with autism located on North Rd this afternoon.

Acting Detective Superintendent Mick O'Dowd said police were called to the property about 11am this morning.

When they arrived police were shown to a detached Queenslander house at the rear of the school which was being used for administration purposes.

And when they lifted the door to an old disused tank they found the body of a grown man inside.

"Initial inquiries indicated the deceased person had been in the pit for quite a number of years, although we don't exactly know until scientific examination has taken place," Supt O'Dowd said.

"Police have established a crime scene."

He added police would now undergo the painstaking process of trying to find DNA on the remains in order to identify the victim.

Police have been asking residents in the area about how well they knew their neighbours.

Police are appealing for information from the public.
