SURFING: Buderim's Nic Jones will launch an assault on the world longboard title in China this week.

Fourth on the world longboard tour, Jones looms as a genuine chance after reaching the semi-finals of the Whalebone Classic in Perth in July.

More recently, he was a semi-finalist in the Taiwan Open of Surfing.

The championship is set to get underway at Hainan Island on Monday.

A few days ago Jones posted a comment a social media saying "The waves are pumping here in China right now, looks like it's going to be the best year so far. Wish me luck.”

Peru's Piccolo Clemente is the defending men's champion while American Rachael Tilly is the defending women's champion.

The women's event has already started.
