Caitlyn shakes to a new tune

X FACTOR votes were tightly under wrap yesterday but that did not discourage The Gympie Times from guessing the fate of Gympie's Caitlyn Shadbolt ahead of last night's live elimination.

Social media was the best way to take the nation's pulse and in the Facebook stakes, Caitlyn was looking solid following Sunday's performance of Taylor Swift's new single, Shake it Off.

And rightly so. Caitlyn revealed a new side to her onstage persona, executing flawless choreography.

The singer had surpassed the 2000-mark with 2300 likes for her post on the X Factor page yesterday, placing her about third at last check.

But the likes mean little unless fans vote and that was the message mentor and judge Ronan Keating gave Sunday night.

"You take it all on board, positive or negative, and deal with it," Keating said.

"You are so professional and so talented - you have so much going on," he said.

"As long as people vote for you, you are here all the way."

The judges all responded enthusiastically to Caitlyn's number.

Natalie Bassingthwaighte said Caitlyn reminded her of a "young Shania Twain", and Redfoo loved the change of pace.

"I love that you changed it up and got out there dancing because you are good," Redfoo said.

"You need to dance more. Love the whole vibe out here addressing the crowd - just really good to see you kind of stepping outside of your comfort zone and taking on a massive hit like that."

The timing of the performance could not have been better, with the Swift original hitting number one on the ARIA Singles Chart yesterday.

"How did you know that was going to be number one?" Bassingthwaighte playfully asked Keating.

Caitlyn's Muster visit last Thursday featured on the show and Minogue was surprised to learn Keating did not go.

"I couldn't go...I had to work here," Keating said.

"Oh man...," Minogue said, looking on in disbelief.
