LAWN BOWLS: Caloundra duo Joel Andersen and Wade Mutzelburg will compete in the latter rounds of the lucrative Australian Open on the Gold Coast from today.

They won six consecutive matches to force their way into the round of 16 of the men's pairs competition.

"It's been good team-work and we've just enjoyed being out there," Mutzelburg said.

"We came in with a bit of form, from the state championships (runner-up) and if things go our way we can definitely make a quarter finals berth."

After claiming success in three sodden sectional games earlier in the tournament, they progressed through three knock-out matches at Helensvale yesterday.

"The greens there ran pretty well, especially after the rain, but it was very gusty. We copped a lot of wind which made it kind of tricky," Mutzelburg said.

Still, they handled the conditions better than most and now face tough opposition towards the pointy end of the tournament.

"They're all pretty good quality (teams) at the Australian Open. There's no easy games out there," he said ahead of games at the event's host club at Broadbeach.

Both also competed in singles, getting through their sections and winning their first games in the round of 256.

But they then bowed out in the round of 128.

Mutzlerburg was eliminated by fellow Sunshine Coast bowler Troy Somerville, who made it to the round of 16 before he was beaten by Aaron Teys.
