Carley makes cut for prestigious art prize

CARLEY Cornelissen's love for animals and art has made her one of six Coast artists shortlisted for the Sunshine Coast Art Prize.

The 32-year-old art supply worker, of Buderim, has been working hard on canvas since she was a teenager.

"I studied when I was 18 and have been practising more and more and showing in galleries for the last three years," Ms Cornelissen said.

Three weeks ago she heard she was a finalist for the prestigious art prize.

"It's pretty exciting. I've submitted works before and have had no luck," she said.

Ms Cornelissen's work is a mixed media piece which celebrates animals while raising awareness about protecting endangered species.

The work, titled Hold on Ladies, I'm a Coming, aims to give animals a personality.

Sunshine Coast Council's Community Programs Portfolio chair Jenny McKay said the art prize, now in its ninth year, was a significant cultural initiative for the region.

"It has once again attracted the best contemporary and emerging artists our nation has to offer," Cr McKay said.

"The finalists represent an exceptionally high standard of traditional 2D interpretations of painting and drawing."

She said the bar was raised each year, challenging the selection panel to arrive at 40 finalists from nearly 300 entries.

"I certainly do not envy this year's judges' role in critiquing and reviewing these works to determine the winner," Cr McKay said.
