Category 1 TC Gillian expected to hit land today

TROPICAL Cyclone Gillian is making its way to land after building up energy in waters of the state's north.

The Bureau of Meteorology has a current cyclone warning out for everywhere from Kowanyama to Cape York.

They've also posted cyclone watches for coastal and island communities from Gilbert River Mouth to Kowanyama in case the cyclone alters direction slightly.

TC Gillian is expected to move south to southeast today while gaining energy but the cyclone's core may not cross onto land, instead staying in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Gales are expected to develop between Cape Keerweer and Cape York during this morning, possibly extending further south to Kowanyama later today and may extend to Gilbert River Mouth during Monday.

Destrctive winds of up to 150 km/hr may develop later today between Kowanyama and Cape York if the cyclone continues to intensify and passes closer to the coast.

People between Kowanyama and Cape York should immediately commence or continue preparations, especially securing boats and property using available daylight hours.
