Coast prepares to celebrate Australia Day 2015

IT'S all set to be an action-packed Australia Day on the Sunshine Coast, from thong-chucking, to dunny races to half-a-million dollar race meets. There's something for all.

The 2015 Ginger Flower and Food Festival will wrap up on Sunday, January 25, with the annual event at the Ginger Factory the perfect tonic to lead into Australia Day festivities.

Australia Day will feature, among plenty of beach-bound revelry, entertainment for families and punters alike.

The Sunshine Coast Turf Club will host the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Sunshine Coast Cup, with more than $500,000 up for grabs, including the $100,000 feature race, while kids will also be catered for trackside, with jumping castle and face painting also on offer.

Sunshine Coast Destination Limited CEO Simon Ambrose was spruiking the benefits of an Australia Day celebration schedule that would benefit all parts of the Coast.

"The focus of the weekend is usually on our beaches, but just half-an-hour inland visitors can experience the remarkable versatility of the ginger plant, which not only grows a beautiful flower but is an essential ingredient in food and wellness therapies," Mr Ambrose said.

Meanwhile, thong-throwing fever will hit Aussie World, which will once again host its popular True Blue Dunny Races, with the day's frivolity kicking off from 10am.

And in more good news for thong lovers, the Havaiana Australia Day Thong Challenge will once again hit Mooloolaba, with punters encouraged to grab hold of their inflatable Havaianas and help set the world record for the longest line of inflatable thongs, by heading to www.havaianasthongchal lenge.com.au.

Maleny and Buddina will also host community events, with all welcomed at the Australia Day breakfasts to be held in both areas.
