Dual marathon winner admits she's way underdone for race

TWO-time Sunshine Coast Marathon champion Roxie Schmidt admits it will take a miracle for her to win her third successive title next Sunday, August 31.

The 2012 and 2013 victor had not run competitively since last year's Coast race until lacing up for the Brisbane Marathon two weeks ago - deciding to enter just one week before the race.

Schmidt attributed that decision to witnessing Australia's Michael Shelley win gold in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games.

"I only decided to go compete in Brisbane because Michael Shelley won, and I hadn't even trained or anything," she said.

The 2011 Gold Coast Marathon runner-up managed a time of two hours and 54 minutes in Brisbane - 14 minutes outside her 2013 effort.

Schmidt said although her time was decent, it was proof she was nowhere near her best.

"I am not expecting to win on the Coast," she said.

"I am just doing it because it is a fantastic event and the course is really fun and is spectator friendly.

"I have no expectations and am just doing it because I love running."

Schmidt has battled agonising stress fractures in her feet and heels over the past few years, making it increasingly hard for her to partake in the arduous training required for endurance racing.

The high school maths and science teacher, who lived on the Coast for eight years before moving to Brisbane at the start of this year, said work commitments had also taken a toll.

"Marathon training is almost like having a full-time job," she said.

"I feel fantastic at the moment, the opposite to when I am running a marathon."

Schmidt is known for talking herself down before events, just as she did before claiming the Coast title in 2012.

However, she insisted she was legitimately underdone for next Sunday's race.

"I keep fit and do run, but just a maximum of 10km - so I'm not trained for marathon racing," she said.

"Normally I like to be fully marathon fit before I do one and that's not the case this year."
