MAROOCHY North Shore Lions Club has presented a Children of Courage Award at Pacific Paradise State School to Year 3 student Chanel Hardy.
The Lions Children of Courage Project gives recognition to children between the ages of five and 15 who show courage, tenacity and a desire to be the best they can be.
Project co-ordinator, Lion Gary Craven, said the awards were not a competition as every recipient was a winner in his or her own right.
Chanel wanted to take up Calisthenics and began as her aunt's pupil.
By continuous practice, she improved her skills until she was able to perform with a group in competitions.
As Chanel was a very timid little girl and reluctant to stand out in a crowd, her mother said of Chanel's first performance, "I was afraid Chanel would not come out on the stage or would run off in the middle of the performance.”
However, she faced her fears and continued. Even though the group did not place then or in coming events, they persisted and this year took third in the state calisthenics competition.
Chanel has set her sights higher and wants to accomplish a solo performance next year.
Publicity officer Carol Goldsworthy said Maroochy North Shore Lions Club was happy to present the award to Chanel, who was nominated by her teachers, and members applaud her newfound confidence which she now carried into everyday life at home and school.
