"PULL out the carols please, girls.”
With this request, musical director Ken Chadwick sets in motion the preparations for the annual Christmas Crackers concert by the Sunshine Coast Concert Band.
The behind-the-scenes preparations for this event are many but perhaps one of the most important aspects is getting the correct music to 40-plus musicians.
This task falls to three young-at-heart women: Lois Travers, of Battery Hill, Val Clarkson, of Maleny, and Val Lane, of Maroochydore.
The Sunshine Coast Concert Band librarians find their hands full every month preparing music for band members.
With hundreds of songs in the band's library, these dedicated volunteers attack the filing cabinets with gusto, ensuring that the percussion section has what it needs, as do the brass, reed and wind instruments.
They form a very important section of the band's support group.
All are volunteers and in the 20 years the band has been operating, that has resulted in more than $500,000 being raised for local charities and not-for-profit organisations.
The Christmas Crackers concert this year will be held this Sunday, December 4.
An afternoon of musical Christmas favourites as well as songs from many other genres will be on the program from 2pm at Kawana Community Hall in Nanyima St, Buddina.
Vocalists will be Tanya McFadyen, Dave Stygal, Alan Winter and special guest and Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson.
The cost is $15 and includes afternoon tea. Children under 14 are free.
Book with Val on 5443 9547 or buy tickets at the door if they are available.
