CLIVE Palmer is clearly banking on Australia's love of sport translating to the ballot box on September 14.

Having already announced rugby league great Glenn Lazarus and former A League soccer goalkeeper Scott Higgins as Senate candidates, Mr Palmer revealed former world boxing champion Barry Michael and Aussie rules legend Doug Hawkins would stand for the upper house in Victoria.

Mr Michael, who is in the Australian Boxing Hall of Fame, will be the number one candidate on the Palmer United Party's ticket.

He won the IBF super featherweight championship in 1985 and held the title for two years.

Mr Hawkins is one of Victoria's most recognisable and loved sporting personalities.

He was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 2004, having played more than 300 games for Footscray.

"Barry Michael and Doug Hawkins are not only great Australian sporting heroes, they are great Australians," Mr Palmer said.

"Both are proven leaders who are in touch with their communities and will make outstanding senate candidates for our party."

Mr Palmer said the party still planned to field lower house candidates in all 150 seats, as well as Senate candidates in every state and territory.
