CLP takes NT election

THE Country Liberal Party has claimed a victory in the Northern Territory after more than a decade under Labor leadership.

CLP leader Terry Mills was elected the Territory's new chief minister after a more than 6% swing towards his party at Saturday's election. He replaces outgoing chief minister Paul Henderson who came into office in 2007.

Mr Mills campaigned hard on tackling crime and addressing the Territory's budget deficit. In his victory speech, Mr Mills thanked the people who voted for a better future and for change.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard publicly congratulated Mr Mills and paid tribute to Mr Henderson's "dynamic and courageous" leadership.

"He leaves the position of Chief Minister with an outstanding record of achievements in health and education, including a huge boost for education for remote Indigenous communities," she said.

"Importantly, he leaves an economy in superb condition, with an unemployment rate of just 4 per cent, down from 7.4 per cent, the envy of the developed world."

Party supporter Queensland Premier Campbell Newman also issued his congratulations to Mr Mills and highlighted the win for his federal Labor counterparts.

"Labor governments have this fanciful belief that they can spend as much money as they like without any consequences," he said.

"Prime Minister Julia Gillard should take note. It's happening now federally and it happened for far too long in our State."
