Coast athletes preparing for New Zealand ultramarathon

NUTRs are about to be unleashed on New Zealand.

The group of athletes, all members of the Noosa Ultra Trail Runners (NUTRs), are currently in New Zealand ahead of the country's most prestigious off-road running events.

Called Tarawera Ultramarathon, the event offers trail runs of 62km, 87km, 102km or 162km starting on Sunday morning.

There's a large contingent from the Coast who have been training through the summer heat, with Dylan Cole-Jones (Buderim) undertaking the 162km race, while Ammon Chesworth (Coolum), Chrissy Redwood (Noosa), Ian Rowe (Doonan), Erin Donaldson (Coolum), Howard McCann (Noosa), Todd Mumberson (Palmwoods) and Kate Child (Pomona) all tackling the 102km event.

Kate Mayne of Pomona has entered the 62km race.

Cole-Jones, an IT program manger, has finished prestigious trail races include the Shotover Mountain Marathon and the Sky Race at Queenstown, and is looking forward to crossing Terawera off his bucket-list.

"Everyone is feeling good - Aamon is very excited to become an ultra runner as this is his first ultra. The weather is miserable...it's wet and expected to be raining all through the event," he said.

"Everyone worked hard ion training. The Queensland humidity training will keep us honest."

Redwood has headed to the land of the long white cloud full of confidence following her first major victory at the Blackall 100 during October.

The Tewantin-based accountant finished the race in 11 hours, 17 minutes and 38 seconds, which was also staged in cold and wet conditions.

Based in Rotorua, the routes encompass seven lakes, forests, waterfalls and some of the most stunning scenery in the world.
