Beach carparks to close until further notice

THE CARPARKS of several Coast beaches will be closed from midnight tonight to limit the number of people gathering in public.

Mayor Mark Jamieson this morning announced the measures aimed at reducing the risk of transmission of COVID-19.

He said it was a difficult decision, brought on by concerns from Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service.

"Yesterday afternoon they made a request to Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie councils to urgently consider increasing barriers to public access including beaches," Cr Jamieson said.

"As a result, the decision has been made this morning to close the carparks at a number of Sunshine Coast beaches at midnight tonight."

Acting Superintendent Jason Overland said police would be issuing fines to people travelling or visiting the beach for non-essential reasons.

He said the carparks to close were "the patrolled beaches where families might like to go".

Carparks at Noosa will close along with:

  • Coolum - the main carpark at the skate bowl and the Coolum Surf Club car park
  • Mudjimba Esplanade carpark
  • Maroochydore - near beach access 141 carpark north of Maroochy Surf Club, Maroochy Surf Club carpark and beach access 150 car park
  • Alex Surf Club - carparks north and south of the surf club
  • Mooloolaba - northern carpark, Beach Terrace carpark, Mooloolaba Surf Club carpark, Mooloolaba spit off street carparks
  • Buddina - at Kawana Surf Club
  • Dicky Beach carpark
  • Moffat Beach carpark and Lower Neill Street carpark
  • Kings Beach - the Esplanade carpark
  • Happy Valley - the Esplanade carpark and
  • Bulcock Beach carpark

"It is effectively locals only," Act Supt Overland said.

"If you can't walk there, don't get in your car to get there."

Cr Jamieson said several major carparks would remain closed until further notice.

The announcement followed Gold Coast City Council's decision earlier this week to close carparks at three of its major beaches.
