Coast girls ripping it up
TEEN stars Isabella Nichols and Laura Poncini are showing why Surfing Australia's national coach rates the Sunshine Coast as the world's best producer of female talent.
Moffat Beach's Poncini dominated the opening heat of the under-16 category at the ISA World Junior Championship in Ecuador yesterday morning before Coolum's Nichols led the way in the under-18s.
The performance did not surprise Surfing Australia national coach Andy King, who described Poncini, Nichols and Mooloolaba's Keely Andrew as proof the Sunshine Coast was the best place in the world for producing top female surfers.
King said the Gold Coast used to hold that mantel but a sensational five years had given it to the Coast.
"What you guys are producing there is just phenomenal," he said.
"That little strip of coastline is producing the best female surfers in the world and I have absolute confidence in saying that."
