THE push for direct flights between Sunshine Coast and Cairns is gaining momentum, with almost 3000 responses to a council survey in just 48 hours.
But it might take a lot more than that to convince airlines to come to the party.
Sunshine Coast Regional Council, which owns the airport, is willing to push for the Cairns services if the community throws its weight behind the idea.
It follows recent successful campaigns to secure business flights to and from Sydney and the re-instatement of services to Adelaide.
The airport's general manager, Peter Pallot, said it was the community's help in a 2014 online survey that convinced Qantas to return to the Coast for Sydney services.
"We want to harness that same energy again in our push for flights north," he said.
Mayor Mark Jamieson said the community have been calling for Cairns services for "a number of years".
"Our research indicates that there is strong demand for flights to Cairns from the Sunshine Coast," he said.
"The survey we are currently conducting is designed to drill down into the demand and find targeted information to use in our discussions with airlines.
"The flights will connect families between the two centres and provide direct connectivity for both domestic and international tourism."
A council spokesman said the response to the survey so far had been "outstanding" with more than 2800 responses received within 48 hours.
But while Sunshine Coast residents might be ready to fly north, at least one airlinedoesn't feel quite the same.
A Jetstar spokeswoman said while the airline offered several flight routes out of the Sunshine Coast, North Queensland wasn't in its plans.
"We don't have any plans to introduce direct flights between the Sunshine Coast and Cairns but we're always tracking customer demand," she said.
"Jetstar offers more than 20,000 seats in and out of the Sunshine Coast each week, three times more than other airlines."
She said those wanting to travel to northern Queensland would have to continue to do so from the state's bigger airports.
"Jetstar's domestic network includes flights to Cairns from both Brisbane and the Gold Coast."
Virigin Airlines did not respond to the Daily's inquiries.
