Coast talents win school divisions at national surf titles

SURFING: Sunshine Coast surfers have combined to win events in the Australian School Sport competition at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles at Phillip Island on Saturday.

Coolum Beach's Elia Smith and Yandina Creek's Kara Petersen joined forces to win the Under-19 Girls MR Shield final for Queensland.

They beat New South Wales duo Jessie Van Niekerk and Carly Shanahan 22.40 to 9.50.

Meanwhile, Alexandra Headland's Alister Reginato and Wurtulla's Will Carter combined to win the Under-16 Boys MR Shield final for their state.

They edged New South Wales pair Jay Brown and Finley Padman 21.95 to 21.05.

Reginato also featured in the Under-16 Bows All Stars final, with Coolangatta's Kai Tandler, but they were pipped by New South Wales surfers Taj Watson and Keanu Miller 24.65 to 20.05.

Reginato proved to be one of the surfers of the meet.

He finished third in the under-16 boys section of the national titles proper, forging his way into the four-surfer final with a series of strong displays.

Ultimately, his score of 15.65 just fell short of winner, Victoria's Xavier Huxtable.

Western Australian Jack Thomas won the marquee under-18 boys title

Victoria's India Robinson won the under-18 girls title, with Sunshine Coasters Siena Hanna and Amber Dods reaching the semi-finals.

Western Australia's Jamaica Selby won the under-16 girls division.

New South Wales' Joel Vaughan won the under-14 boys title, with Little Mountain's Cameron MacDougall making it into the semi-finals.

Victoria's Sage Goldsbury won the under-14 girls title.
