SURFING: Mitch Coleborn's hopes of competing on next year's world tour are essentially dashed, after he was bundled out of the season-ending event of the Qualifying Series.

The gifted goofy footer from Wurtulla needed to finish second in the 10,000-point US Vans World Cup of Surfing and have other results go his way to earn a berth on the sport's big stage.

But he was eliminated in round three, finishing last in a four-man heat won by world tour competitor Matt Wilkinson.

Coleborn went into the event as the 35th-highest ranked surfer on the QS.

The top-10 on the year-end QS standings (not including surfers qualifying in the top-22 on the Championship Tour rankings) get spots on next year's top tier.

Coleborn has just missed out on a spot on the CT on a few of occasions in the past, most notably in 2015.

This year, his best result was a ninth placing at the 10,000-point Vans US Open of Surfing event at California in July.
