'Conservative intellect' Christopher Pearson has died

ADELAIDE journalist Christopher Pearson was described as a leading "conservative intellect" after his passing in his home town on Sunday night.

Mr Pearson wrote what would be his final column for The Australian two days ago, before passing away aged 61.

Among his many roles were editor of the Adelaide Review and speech writer for Prime Minister John Howard.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott described him "one of our country's finest conservative intellects" and a steadfast friend.

"I suspect he never fully appreciated the impact he had on others and the sense of gratitude we have for him," Mr Abbott said in a statement.
