MMA: He rules the UFC and now Conor McGregor could soon be taking a role in hit TV series Game of Thrones.

A report in the The Sunday Life quoted an unnamed source saying the champion fighter had been approached to be part of the HBO blockbuster.

The Irishman is on a break from the octagon as he prepares for the birth of his first child with partner Dee Devlin.

McGregor has history with the series, having previously trained with giant actor Hafthor Bjornsson, who plays Gregor "The Mountain” Clegane.

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss are big fans of UFC fans and the source told The Sunday Life: "He was headhunted as it were by HBO. They believed he would be a perfect fit for the show.”

The duo appeared on the UFC Unfiltered Podcast in July and spoke of their admiration for McGregor.

"We stayed up with a group of the actors until 6am in the morning watching the McGregor-Aldo fight in Vegas this past December,” they said.

"We talk more about MMA than we do Game of Thrones.

"Every day we get home from shooting we will just sit around drink beer and watch Fight Pass.”
