Car thief dies in head-on smash

A MAN with substance and alcohol abuse history; and a criminal record including car theft, assault and wilful damage; died in a crash on the Capricorn Highway on Thursday morning.

The deceased, confirmed by police as Farron Shaun Andrew Brown, is believed to have been released from prison recently.

The van Brown was driving when he died had been stolen from the Brunswick Hotel at 7am.

This was not the first vehicle Brown is believed to have stolen - he was jailed in March 2007, aged 17, for stealing a car from a Rockhampton business which he drove to Woorabinda.

The Ford van which crashed yesterday between the Yeppen roundabout and Gracemere at 7.45am was owned by Moonshiners Professional Cleaners.

The woman driving the other vehicle, a Kia sedan, sustained a fractured ankle and had chest pain, according to a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman.

The woman, 48, was taken to Rockhampton Hospital about 9.30am.

Central Regional Acting Regional Traffic Inspector Steve Hall said the full circumstances which led to the crash had not been determined.

"For an unknown reason, the vehicle travelling west has travelled on the incorrect side of the road," he said.

The highway was closed and traffic was diverted for almost eight hours yesterday as a forensic team investigated.

Insp Hall said police would like to talk to anyone who witnessed the crash.

He said a number of people had already come forward with information after the call for witnesses came from the media yesterday.

Witnesses are urged to call the Rockhampton Police Station on 4932 3500 or Police Link 13 1444.

Brown was jailed in November 2009 for 2 ½ years, aged 21, following an argument with his girlfriend a year before sentencing.

He pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and assault occasioning bodily harm after he stabbed his girlfriend in the back.

He had also been jailed in May 2008 after smashing windows of cars on Herbert St.
