Solution needed as crashes pile up on Moy Pocket Rd

FOUR crashes in a week, three in the past three days and six in three months.

Those are just the figures from Moy Pocket Rd, Brooloo, which since its upgrade, had a good safety record until recently.

"It's got some bends and crests, but it is not really a bad road," Imbil police officer-in-charge Terry Kennedy said.

"Two of our crashes in the past week have involved trucks, but it's not necessarily a problem with trucks.

"It's just a problem with the people (and the number of people) driving on the road.

"Part of the problem is necessary road repair and improvements on the Mary Valley Hwy, which was repeatedly washed out in the torrential rain of recent summers. It's closed at the bluff and people can't get over the top."

The alternative routes to and from Kenilworth are Moy Pocket Rd and Skyring Creek Rd.

Sgt Kennedy warns of a big increase in police patrols on the road in coming weeks.

He said since the bluff closed there had been a significant increase in traffic.

"And probably a lot of people don't know what the road is like," he said. "We had a truck turn in front of a car, which is unusual, because the trucks usually do all the right things.

"On Saturday night a car lost control. On Sunday a motorcycle swerved to miss a wallaby and lost control.

"A car and a truck had a head-on and that was a fairly serious injury. In another crash, there were cattle on the road. One car stopped and the other one behind it didn't."

"It's a very twisty road, with hills and bends and blind crests. People just need to be aware of that."
