Cruelled last summer, ironman aims to qualify

EMERGING ironman Luke Cuff thinks being last year's perennial bridesmaid has only made him stronger.

The Mooloolaba ironman was unlucky to miss out on last year's Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Ironman Series, finishing one spot shy of qualification.

He subsequently finished fourth in the Surf Qualifying Series, where the top three gained a place in this year's series.

If anything, he said those results had spurred him on even harder in his quest for a spot in the ironman series.

"I was disappointed at the time, but I am still just a young kid and have just turned 19 so there's plenty of time," he said.

"This year my goal is to be a little bit more consistent and hopefully with (coach Michael King) Kingy's guidance I can make that goal."

Cuff's chance to get on to this summer's series will come down to his performance at the ironman trials at Salt Beach from September 6-7.

He said his performance at last year's event had him poised for a big showing next month.

"I am quietly confident, without going around town boasting about it," he said.

"Hopefully with my skill level and where the trial is and how the format is run, I can make it some of the best racing I have done.

"I have done it before and just need to ... push the pace with the boys."

The reigning under-20 ironman world champion said the cutthroat nature of the gruelling trials had him even more inspired to dominate proceedings in New South Wales.

"I know there are a lot of talented guys doing the trial this year and it is going to be a tough one," he said. "Four from 80 that are competing get through (to the ironman series) so there will be a lot of broken hearts that day."

Cuff will also compete at next month's world championships in France.

"I have been to Europe before and have some family in England, so it will be great to compete and then spend some time with friends," he said.
