Currimundi thrift shop calls on the community
CURRIMUNDI locals have a new opportunity to give back to their local community.
A new second hand store has just opened its doors and it's calling on the community to dig deep and support them.
Kidney Support Network, is a not-for-profit charity store that operates solely on a volunteer basis.
All of its funds go directly back into supporting kidney disease patients by transporting them to and from their appointments and providing other necessary support.
Katheryn Rayner, of the Kidney Support Network, said their services are vital for those in the community suffering from kidney disease.
"We've had non-stop requests from clients since our cars haven't been running,” she said.
"There's little public transport, especially at night and many clients won't be able to afford the cost of a taxi.
"Our drivers will always be there to pick our clients up.”
The support network have just received a grant giving them the ability to resume assisting their patients but further support is needed.
"We've got to look at least having another car by April next year at the latest,” she said.
"We rely on our volunteers to also do the driving which is one of the biggest things.”
Ms Rayner said without the support of the community the store couldn't possibly help all the people that it does.
"All the stock we have is donated by the community,” she said.
Ms Rayner hopes to offer patients many other services as they grow.
"Next year I want to send volunteers massage therapists to the hospital to provide hand and foot massage's to patients going through dialysis,” she said.
"They have to sit very still for five hours for more than three times a week.
Ms Rayner that above all though one of the most important services they offer is their un-divided support.
"A lot of the people just want to come for a chat,” she said.
"My door is always open.”
The store is now open at Op Shop at 1 Gannawarra St, Currimundi.
To officially mark the opening of the store, the Kidney Support Network will hold a launch day on December 10 and is inviting the community to come down.
