Daniel Morcombe's killer Brett Cowan beyond saving

IT'S hard to imagine why monsters like Brett Peter Cowan are set free into our community despite being involved in the most horrific crimes against children.

Cowan's perverted life story, and the failure of the judicial system to protect children from him, should be a wake-up call for judges and politicians across the land.

Put simply, Daniel Morcombe would have been alive today had authorities fully recognised the evil in Cowan, and acted accordingly.

When Cowan was just 18, he was ordered to undertake community service when he snatched a young boy from a playgroup in Brisbane.

He subjected the boy to a series of horrific sex acts but was sentenced to only two years jail. He served 14 months.

Later in Darwin, he took a six year boy from a park, raping, suffocating him and leaving him for dead.

Despite having been to jail for raping another child, Cowan was given a seven-year jail term.

He was released after four years.

As Bruce and Denise Morcombe outlined in their powerful victim impact statements, there are some people beyond rehabilitation.

Brett Peter Cowan is one of them.

Given his sordid past, he should never be released - and nor should those of his ilk.
