Defence cleared on death of Victoria Cross medal recipient

THE internal investigation into the death of Victoria Cross recipient Special Forces' soldier Corporal Cameron Baird in Afghanistan has cleared Defence of "any weaknesses" related to his passing.

Corp Baird was last month posthumously award the nation's highest military honour for his bravery during a close range, heavy fire operation in Uruzgan that took his life in June last year.

A Defence Department investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death was released Friday, recommending only that a Commission of Inquiry was not warranted into Corp Baird's death.

The inquiry officer's redacted report highlighted Corp Baird's leadership and actions on June 22, 2013, as well as recognising the actions of two other soldiers involved in the operation.
