Dirt cheap fun during holidays

YOUNGSTERS will have the opportunity to get their hands dirty and beat the school holiday boredom, with Queensland Garden Expo organisers unveiling a large range of free children's activities at the Nambour Showgrounds from tomorrow.

Queensland Garden Expo event manager Marion Beazley said much-loved gardening guru and Gardening Australia presenter Costa Georgiadis would lead the youngsters in honing their green thumbs.

"This activity is a really fun and hands-on way for kids to learn about composting to help feed the soil and hydrate the landscape," Ms Beazley said.

"Throw in the importance of recycling, repurposing and refusing and it has all the ingredients necessary to tackle sustainable futures right there in your waste receptacle.

"Costa will work with participants to sort through common items disposed of around the home and identify which ones can and can't be composted."

Ms Beazley said dirtgirl from hit kids' television show dirtgirlworld would attend on Saturday and Sunday, and a new children's area known as the Kids Garden Patch would be launched at the expo.

"The Kids Garden Patch will include a craft area as well as an opportunity to dig for vegetables, plant seeds and move sand around the garden patch, and there will be kids' planting activities in the Giant Kitchen Garden," Ms Beazley said.

"As always, Old McDonald's Farm will offer kids the chance to get up close and personal with a range of farm animals including calves, goats, chickens and ducks, just to name a few.

"Last, but not least, we'll once again set up the popular free children's playground including giant slide, jumping castle and merry-go-round, which will be open throughout the three-day event."
