Dogs are on alert for crime in streets

A NEW community watchdog group but their best paws forward on Saturday at Peregian Springs.

The Dogs on Patrol at the Ridges Sports Complex saw owners receive a free leash as the police teamed up with Neighbourhood Watch, Sunshine Coast Council, RSCPA , Guide Dogs, 4Paws and Pet Barn for a policing initiative.

Competitions included best dressed dog, handsomest hound, loveliest lady and best junior handler. Dogs on Patrol encourages pet owners to stay safe whilst walking their dogs and report to police any crimes they see being committed or any suspicious behaviour or activity.

Police enlisting neighbourhood dogs and their owners to become the eyes and ears out in the streets of Sunshine Coast suburbs.

A police spokesman said officers can't be everywhere all the time.

"So we rely on our community members to be on the look-out.”

"Dog walkers are out and about every day, walking the streets of our suburbs.”
