UPDATE 2.30PM: Bundaberg Police Sergeant Mick Ward has called for drivers to "stop the carnage" in the wake of a horrific head-on smash on the Isis Hwy that resulted in the deaths of two men.

Sgt Ward said the two cars in the crash were travelling in opposite directions when the south-bound car crossed on to the wrong side of the road to overtake some trucks and collided head-on with the north-bound car.

"Get home safely, stop the carnage on the road," Sgt Ward said.

"Take the extra five minutes, think about the fatal five."

It's believed two people have been pronounced dead following the Pine Creek two-car crash that happened at about 6am.

Police have confirmed that two people travelling in the same car died at the scene.

Another person reportedly escaped with minor injuries to their leg and another suffered minor head injuries, although authorities are yet to confirm that.

They were taken to Bundaberg Hospital for treatment.

Police are having to divert traffic around the crash scene.

West bound traffic is being diverted at the Ring Rd onto Goodwood Rd.

East bound traffic from Apple Tree Creek is being diverted to Foleys Rd to Goodwood Rd.

All Childers traffic should go via Goodwood Rd, not the Isis Hwy.

Police expect the section of the highway where the crash happened to be closed for at least the next few hours.

The tragedy takes the region's road toll to 16 this year.
