Drink-drive numbers shock top cop

AS A temporary new face in Noosa, Acting Senior Sergeant Tom Dawson has been left shaking his head at those who continue to drink and drive.

The Noosa Police Station relieving officer in charge briefed media about the coming police road, beach and street blitz for the Christmas and New Year period.

"For whatever reason people continue to drink-drive - I don't know why, it's just appalling up here. I don't get it," said Act Sen Sgt Dawson last week before finishing his local stint.

And there is a relatively new menace - one that has shown up on the Noosa North Shore - drug drivers.

Noosa police will again be targeting the Noosa North Shore which is notorious for reckless driving behaviour in peak holiday seasons.

The beach is a designated road where all road rules apply, plus with special slow zones through popular beach reserves.

"We had an operation over there last weekend and there are about six pending drug-driving prosecutions," Act Sen Sgt Dawson said.

"They were tested and they came up positive so we are awaiting the results of secondary testing before we charge them."

Noosa Police will enforce the road safety Travel Safe campaign over the Christmas period.

"There will be a concentrated effort on the fatal four - speed, alcohol, fatigue and not wearing seat belts, but the message is take care on the roads," Act Sen Sgt Dawson said.

"The last thing you want is to have someone to knock on the family door to let them know someone has died in an accident.

"It's certainly the last thing we want to be doing."

Police in Noosa will be putting on extra road policing patrols.
