Drugs and elite sport don’t mix, warns judge

A RUGBY league player has been given a stern reminder by a judge that drugs and elite sport do not mix.

Jeffrey David Bickford was before the Maroochydore District Court yesterday for breaching his suspended sentence for an earlier offence which highlighted his drug history.

His barrister, David Crews, said Bickford was employed and played for the Beerwah Bulldogs.

Judge John Robertson asked Bickford directly if he was "determined to spend time in prison". Bickford answered "No" from the dock.

"You are a mature man, an intelligent man, you of all people must know of the problem elite sportsmen have when they get involved with drugs," Judge Robertson said.

He increased the operation of Bickford's sentence by another six months.
