Event revs up King of the Mountain

MOTORCYCLE enthusiasts from all over south-east Queensland converged on the Sunshine Coast earlier this month to participate in the 10th annual King of the Mountain Festival Poker Run.

Proudly supported by the Gympie Historical Motorcycle Club, almost 300 riders enjoyed a scenic trip through the Noosa hinterland, enjoying a friendly game of poker along the way by collecting cards from designated stops on Sunday, July 3.

Event organiser Stephen Stewart said riders had enjoyed the beautiful weather and the company of other motorcycle enthusiasts in the charity event.

"The riders really appreciated the route and made short work of the delicious home-baked morning tea provided by Lions volunteers," Mr Stewart said.

With the ride culminating at the Kin Kin Country Life Hotel, the holder of a straight flush was declared the winner of the poker game.

As part of the King of the Mountain Festival, the Poker Run is a major fundraiser for the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club and all entry fees go towards helping the not-for-profit organisation support a wide range of local charities and school programs.

This year marks the 38th anniversary of the famously challenging King of the Mountain Race and Cooroy-Pomona Bendigo Bank manager Geoff Edwards is proud to sponsor the international event.

"Our new Pomona agency has been well-received and supported by the local community and we are very pleased to be able to invest in such an iconic community event," Mr Edwards said.

On Sunday, July 24, locals and visitors to the region can again look forward to a huge variety of attractions and free entertainment as part of the community-orientated King of the Mountain event including a skate comp, antiques fair, amusement rides, heritage markets and much more.

Festivities will begin early with the arrival of many different car clubs showing off their classic vehicles in the lead-up to the big foot race at 2.30pm.

Celebrations will continue afterwards and into the evening with live music and free entertainment.
