EXPLAINED: Why everyone is talking about a rock wall

CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a rock wall at the mouth of the Maroochy River have been put on hold while Sunshine Coast Council undertakes community consultation.

Councillors last week deferred a decision on a staff recommendation to build the wall to replace the existing geotextile, sandbag groynes which are reaching their use-by date.

Councillors considered four options including replacing the existing footprint of sandbag groynes with rock as well as investigating an alternative single 200m-long rock groyne into the ocean from the camping ground.

The proposal has proven unpopular with plenty in the community who have made it clear they don't want a massive seawall being developed at the mouth of the river.

While it hasn't been ruled out, the proposal has at least been put on ice, with Mayor Mark Jamieson proposing an alternate recommendation to retain the status quo, sparing the sandbags for now, with more investigation to be carried out into all four options put forward by staff.

His proposal, which was supported unanimously by councillors, will mean a report is handed to the council in June, either providing detailed further analysis of the options, or an update on where the investigations are at.

One of the most outspoken opponents of the rock wall plan is former Maroochy councillor Jim Cash, who is also a former member of the Maroochy River Entrance Working Party, a life member of the Sunshine Coast Environment Council and a marine educator for 40 years.

Today the Sunshine Coast Daily presents Mr Cash's views as well as an outline of the options presented by council staff.
