LETTER OF THE DAY: Extend roof logic to death of refugee
READER COMMENT: SO TONY Abbott's $20 million royal commission into the home insulation scheme, the one that didn't ask a single question of a single employer, came up with the stunning conclusion that it was all the fault of the people paying the bills.
This is a startlingly novel view of legal liability.
Did the commission show that the rate of deaths actually increased?
No, because no figures for home insulation deaths and injuries were ever kept before this scheme.
Did the commission show house fires increased?
No, the opposite in fact. Despite the huge increase in roof insulation, house fires actually reduced by a whopping 70%.
Tony Abbott claims the insulation scheme "caused" the four deaths, which is illogical.
Consider the murder of a refugee in detention on Manus Island, killed by guards whose wages were paid by taxpayers.
Using the formula of "if you pay the bills you're responsible", Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison "caused" this death.
But of course they deny all responsibility for actions of people employed by a security contractor.
Can someone explain how Kevin Rudd is responsible for deaths in roofs just because he paid the bills but Tony Abbott isn't to blame for a murder committed in a federally funded detention centre.
