Farmers speak up on land clearing laws

THE time to speak up on proposed vegetation management laws is now.

And, it appears graziers are doing just that.

The Queensland Government's is planning to uphold their promise to introduce land clearing laws, which Natural Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said would protect "our climate, our wildlife and our Great Barrier Reef, and the tens of thousands of jobs that depend on the Reef."

However, AgForce general president Grant Maudsley said the laws would create more red tape for farmers trying to "feed their animals during drought".

AgForce is calling on those impacted to make a written submissions to a parliamentary inquiry.

"With the laws now being considered by the State Development, Natural Resources and Agricultural Industry Development Committee, it's important as many individuals as possible explain how the laws affect them personally so the committee can better understand the impact on farm production," he said.

In the meantime, graziers have used social media to highlight their concerns.

Chareville cattlewoman Jacqui Tickell posted this message to social media:

"Feeding your cattle herd with Mulga trees is just part of the job when living in a drought affected area. These trees do regenerate quickly ready for a subsequent drought. If we don't manage Mulga trees they grow out of control as a woody weed. We are utilising a weed to feed hungry animals and the government is tying us up in red tape to stop it. Who is going to feed all these cattle once the Mulga thinning is abolished?"

Her post has been shared more than 250 times.

Written submissions are due by 12pm Thursday 22 March 2018 with more information about the committee's inquiry and how to make a submission available at: http://bit.ly/2IjmU0H
