Fishing trip tragedy started at Sunshine Coast

A BOATING trip from the Sunshine Coast turned to tragedy, with one man dead and two others lucky to survive after a wave flipped their small boat.

The trio - two men from Beachmere and one from Yarraman - left Kawana Waters at 4pm Saturday for an overnight fishing trip.

The alarm was raised early yesterday morning after a rogue wave knocked out the 5-6 metre fishing boat's engine before a second wave capsized the vessel.

The three men were thrown into the cold ocean 10-20 nautical miles north-east of Cape Moreton.

A 57-year-old Beachmere man died and his 24-year-old son and a 30-year-old friend airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital suffering hypothermia.

The men were in the water for about 90 minutes to two hours and rescuers believe the older man had succumbed to the elements about half an hour before rescuers arrived.
