Fog leaves cloud over royal arrival in New Zealand

THICK fog is causing delays to a number of flights in and out of Wellington Airport this morning, just hours before the royal family are due to touch down.

Poor visibility around the airport has forced commercial carriers to delay some of their flights until the dense fog lifts.

Passengers are being advised to check with their airline and the airport website for details of whether their flight is affected.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince George, are due to arrive at the airport's military terminal around 11.45am.

It is not yet known whether the fog will delay their landing.

Speculation their flight could be affected by early morning fog was "a little premature", a spokesman for the Royal Visit Office said.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Wellington Airport said some disruptions to scheduled flights were expected this morning.

"We are advising passengers to check with their airline and our website for their flight details,'' she said.

"As for the royal flight I can't tell you if it's going to be affected by the fog or not.''

The airport would "play it by ear" in relation to scheduled commercial flights, she said.

"It's looking slightly clearer than it was [earlier] so fingers crossed it lifts."

A spokeswoman for the Defence Force also said it was too early to tell whether the royal flight would be affected.
