For Alfie life is a dance

NO-ONE has to ask Alfie Shacklock what it’s all about.

At the age of 11 years, he already has the answer to a successful career right at his feet after The Dance Centre Peregian Springs ballet student won two prestigious scholarships in just one week.

Alfie went up against some of Australia’s best young ballet dancers at events in Brisbane and Melbourne.

The first big test was a two-day competition at the Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge pre-intermediate ballet scholarships, in which he was pitted against 55 dancers from Queensland, NSW and Victoria.

His win in the classical ballet 10–12 years category earned him a summer school scholarship to the Australian Ballet in 2017, plus a $500 voucher.

Just two days later, Alfie flew to Melbourne to compete in the inaugural Australian Ballet School Scholarship Awards and Master Classes against 168 other hopefuls from Australia and New Zealand.

In this three-day event Alfie was among 71 dancers in the 10–12 years age group, before it was whittled down to a final eight.

Dancing at the State Theatre at the Melbourne Arts Theatre, Alfie excelled again, finishing runner-up and winning a two-week scholarship to the Australian Ballet School.

“It was a little bit nerve-wracking because there were 11 judges and the theatre was full, but I loved it,” Alfie said.

“I love performing and this was an amazing experience. What a week!”

Australian Ballet Company director David McAllister and Australian Ballet School director Lisa Pavane were among the judges.

Alfie continues to go from strength to strength in pursuit of his dream, nurtured by his family and his teachers at The Dance Centre Peregian Springs.
