MARATHON: From couch to 5km and feeling great

SUNDAY mornings traditionally involved a sleep-in and a lazy breakfast for many people.

But this weekend celebrates a new lifestyle for an intrepid hinterland crew who will toe the line for the 5km run at the Sunshine Coast Marathon festival.

A contingent from the Glass House Mountains Running and MTB Group will take part, having successfully completed the "Couch to 5k" program.

Under the guidance of group co-ordinator Matthew Montague, the dedicated crew started taking their first steps about two months ago.

"Every single one had never run since school," Matt said.

They began with walk-run sessions, starting out by running about only 50m in the first session.

They progressed by combining walking and running, before eventually the walk-and-rest component was dropped for continuous running.

Every Tuesday and Friday morning, 10 participants braved the conditions to achieve their goal.

"Our 'Couchies' are just amazing," Monique Montague said. "They are glowing with excitement. Their ability to push themselves to achieve more PBs is incredible and their bond together is just so touching.

"They have all conquered that hurdle of the first two weeks of boredom and feeling a little exhausted, to now, having more energy than ever before."

The next Couch to 5k group starts on September 15 and everyone is welcome.
