LETTER OF THE DAY: Gaza solution needs extremists outed

READER COMMENT: THERE are no winners, only losers, in the insanity that is the daily violence in the Gaza Strip.

The fault in this crisis lies with both sides - with Israel for its over-the-top and indiscriminate shelling of Gaza City and with Hamas for continuing to send rockets into Israel, knowing full well most will be intercepted by the "iron dome" and inevitably will result in massive retaliation.

As always, the victims are the civilians, innocent children and women.

Knowing this, the only victory Hamas can realistically hope for is in the public relations battle for world opinion - via the sight of dead and injured children.

How could any civilised people contemplate sacrificing so many innocents for a political victory?

Israel was itself once a victimised nation struggling for survival and it should full well understands this situation.

The only real hope is for an international brokered, and enforced, ceasefire and peace talks based on the expulsion of extremists on both sides and a return to the principle of every nation's right to peaceful existence.
