Getting farm-fresh produce on your plate
ROBERTA Schablon has a vision for the South Burnett.
She wants to see locally-grown and sourced produce readily available in restaurants, pubs and cafes all throughout the region.
Mrs Schablon believes everything a chef could possibly need can be found right here in the region.
"Why would you not use what's at your doorstep?” she said.
To help make this dream a reality, Mrs Schablon has created a new Facebook group called South Burnett Produce Connections.
She partners with Discover South Burnett to "assist local producers to connect with South Burnett restaurants, cafes, wineries, chefs, cooks and families that want fresh, healthy, local produce and wanting to support farmers and the local economy.”
"It's time to get serious about where our food is sourced from, purchasing and consuming food seasonally,” Mrs Schablon said.
She was inspired by Jessica Prentice, a US-based chef, author and founding member of Three Stone Hearth, a community-supported kitchen in Berkeley, California.
Ms Prentice coined the word "locavore”, which refers to eating locally-grown foods, generally available within a 160km radius of your home.
Mrs Schablon believes this concept is essential to keeping small communities alive and thriving.
Mrs Schablon, who owns and runs The Saucy Fork, is working hard to promote South Burnett Produce Connections to help foster this concept right here in the South Burnett.
She wants to establish a "food trail” in the region, providing a culinary itinerary for visitors and locals alike.
"With a future food and wine trail project on the way, let's create opportunities by working together and telling the story of South Burnett produce and showcasing our region as a culinary destination for the many benefits tourism brings to our fabulous region,” Mrs Schablon said.
