Glimmer of hope for Aussies as Dutch struggle

THE Socceroos received some encouraging news with World Cup group opponents Holland only able to manage a 2-0 win against Wales in a warm-up game in Amsterdam.

Wales was missing several senior players including talisman Gareth Bale and Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey.

Stars Arjen Robben (pictured) and Jeremain Lens both scored for the Dutch, but striker Robin van Persie was substituted at half-time after struggling due to an ongoing groin problem.

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal, who will coach van Persie at Manchester United next season, said it was only "a precaution" and he was confident the sharpshooter would be fine for the team's opening match against Spain on June 14.

Meanwhile, the 23-man Socceroos squad has travelled to Salvador to prepare for its final warm-up match against Croatia at Pituacu Stadium early tomorrow morning (AEST).
