Golfing blitz: Shankers to shoot 72 holes in a day

Every hole Adam Johnson and his team of Sunny Sea Shankers will play on their golfing marathon will represent seven people who will be diagnosed with melanoma on the Coast next year.

The shocking skin cancer toll locally has spurred Mr Johnson on to recruit a team of 12 keen golfers including professional golfer Wade Hooper and Dylan Fennell to take part in Cancer Council Queensland’s The Longest Day fundraiser at Noosa Golf Club.

Cancer mum’s grim outlook

Their 72-hole golf challenge will drive home skin cancer awareness as well as raise up to $5000 for lifesaving cancer research and support.

“I was shocked by a few of the stats I saw about skin cancer while registering and as we’re heading into summer, I felt we needed to make our group bigger to get some more awareness out there,” Mr Johnson said.

“Ironically, one (Shanker) member is getting a few moles cut out on the day we are playing, so there will only be 12 of us hitting the course.

“Everyone has in one way or another been affected by skin cancer, whether that’s personally or a through a friend or family member,” Mr Johnson said.

The Sunny Sea Shankers have already raised $2234.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan said 539 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed on the Sunshine Coast every year.

“It’s important to encourage golfers who spend much of their time outdoors to practice sun safe behaviours,” Mr McMillan said.

“It’s encouraging to see people like Mr Johnson and his team getting out in their community and reminding people to be sun safe and get their skin checked regularly,” he said.

The Sunny Sea Shankers are Adam Johnson, Dylan Fennell, Matt Mountain, Jack Nicholas, Wade Hooper, Kenny Bridgman, Thom Kirkwood, Cameron Harwood, Joel Mohamed, Nick Campbell, Martin Lowry, Alex Bell and Greg Cassidy.
