Goodbye 'naughty nana': Deb and Rick eliminated from MKR

OH naughty nana, you will be missed.

Long-time married couple Deb and Rick were the first My Kitchen Rules cooks to be eliminated in a sudden death cook-off in Kitchen HQ.

Last night's three-course challenge was like chalk and cheese with the South Australian couple, who have been married for 38 years and have 10 grandchildren, facing off against newlyweds Uel and Shannelle.

It was the first time returning guest judges Karen Martini, Guy Grossi, Liz Egan and Colin Fassnidge judged the food of this year's contestants and they had plenty to say about the two vastly different menus.

Deb and Rick stuck to old-school family favourites, while Uel and Shannelle finally showed off their heritage with three Asian dishes.

The judges didn't know what to make of Deb and Rick's hard bread base for their prawn and avocado tarts and were clearly disappointed they didn't make their own pastry.

Uel and Shannelle had a misstep with their steamed-bun accompaniment to their Singapore chili soft shell crab, but the crab was strong enough on its own.

Evans called the crab dish a "great way to start off a three-course menu".

Again in the main course there were slight imperfections for both teams' sauces.

The judges said Uel and Shannelle's pork belly sauce lacked depth, while they wished for more curry sauce on Deb and Rick's well-cooked lamb shank.

The two teams seemed fairly even going into the final course, with both facing their own challenges with their desserts.

Crepes are delicate and tricky to cook, while Rick's sticky date puddings almost didn't rise.

All the judges were in agreement over the classic flavours in the pudding, but they were divided over sweetness of Uel and Shannelle's crepes and the saltiness of their sauce.

Fassnidge thought the dish was a pleasant surprise, while Evans didn't like the crepes at all.

While Deb and Rick drew on their wealth of experience it wasn't quite enough to impress the judging panel.

"Your menu tonight was full of love and family favourites, but this is a competition and I really needed to see a little bit more personality or personal twist," Martini said.

It was clear the judges preferred Uel and Shannelle's dishes, praising the newlyweds for their well-thought out and executed menu.

 "It is disappointing to go home but the oldies have to hand it over to the young ones," Deb said of her and Rick's elimination.

"I just hope guys your marriage and your life is as happy as Rick's and mine have been."

Tomorrow, the teams have to cook and serve lunch to 200 hungry schoolchildren.

Entrée: Prawn and avocado tart

Main: Spiced lamb shank with green beans and sweet potato and carrot puree

Dessert: Sticky date pudding with vanilla ice cream

Uel and Shannelle

Entrée:  Singaporean chili soft shell crab

Main: Braised pork belly with quail eggs and Asian greens

Dessert: Coconut filled Pandan crepes

Score: 41/60
